
A Future Administration on Adrenaline?
A new Ministry of Government Efficiency, led by none other than Elon Musk himself, is on the verge of transforming the old American administration. The goal? Cut bureaucracy, end its legendary slowness, and bring in a fresh breeze. In this new version of the state, every minute lost could become a minute stolen from productivity, every document that lingers an unnecessary link, every interference or collusion a witch to hunt down.
Farewell to endless procedures and approval circles; with Musk at the helm, we might enter an era where patience is an obsolete luxury. Whether you like him or not, the man fascinates, inspires, or sometimes disturbs, but he leaves no one indifferent. We’ve seen how he’s revolutionized certain sectors of industry and communication, and one can only be curious to see what he could bring to the administration.
In this futuristic administration, the “soft” virtues – such as diplomacy, listening, or patience – would sometimes take a back seat. Survival in this ministry would rely on “Musklike” soft skills of uncompromising effectiveness: chaos management, obsession with results, and raw tenacity. Here, everything is measured, everything is rationalized. Can you imagine ministers disconnecting? Impossible. They would themselves be monitored in real-time, subject to performance quotas with transparent dashboards for each institution. Productivity would become the new Constitution.
Every public function would have its KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), no longer as simple evaluation tools, but as a compass or survival kit. Budgets, funding, team size: everything would be conditioned by each department’s performance. Every quarter, public performance indicators for each sector – education, health, security – would become the new benchmarks of national efficiency. Who would dare hide behind historical inertia? In this Muskian model, every instance of slowness becomes a target. A model where accountability is mandatory. Rather like in a corporation.
In such a ministry, would it be possible to escape the tyranny of time? Gone would be the hours lost in cozy meetings where every word is carefully weighed. The new approach? Five minutes per point, no more. And above all… to the point. The concept is brutal, but the “super-minister” of Efficiency would see no reason to dwell on trivial details. In this world, where every minute has a cost, consensus becomes unnecessary. And if some grumble, the productivity agenda doesn’t wait.
This implies a single ultimate decision-maker… we would lose a bit of nuance in statements, decisions, ways of doing things, wouldn’t we?
Why not go further and treat laws like lines of code? An “agile legislation” system where each law could be updated, improved, or even deleted in real-time, like software updates validated by different chambers in near real-time. Say goodbye to immutable laws, and hello to continuous adjustments, where every obsolete policy is deleted with a click. In this model, the state becomes fluid, adaptable, capable of pivoting without friction. This model of flexibility might be dreamt of for its efficiency but could also worry for the kind of authority it might bring.
In this Muskian universe, each ministry would have the possibility to “pivot” based on feedback, like an innovation lab. Imagine an Education Ministry reinvented as an incubator of new pedagogies – envisioning, piloting, large-scale testing, implementing. Or a Health Ministry operating like a start-up, where each reform is evaluated in real-time. Here, there’s no place for inaction: Parliament itself would be reduced to a quarterly committee validating KPIs and strategic directions.
What if this vision, pushed to the extreme, transformed citizens themselves into “State feedback-givers”? Every citizen could become a shareholder of the Republic, with a right to vote and direct evaluation of its leaders. Continuous feedback platforms, where citizens would rate the ministers’ actions and laws’ results. This direct feedback would become the new basis of democracy, transforming each citizen into a public investor, guardian of collective efficiency. Hard to implement, but after all, who finances administrators? Citizens. So, they too might demand accountability.
This ministry of hyper-productivity would, of course, have its consequences: the state would function like a machine optimized to the extreme, but it might also leave traces of inhumanity in its wake. The obsession with output and pure efficiency could erase what makes human relationships unique. The cost of this efficiency would undoubtedly be a more brutal, more ruthless public life, where gaps are swiftly punished and patience becomes an “inappropriate” quality. Some would benefit, while others would be left behind. Would the common good truly be improved?
Admittedly, this scenario might be taken to the extreme, but it gives us pause.
It’s meant to show how crucial soft skills are and that there’s no universal set of soft skills for every setting. Each ecosystem thrives on certain skills.
After all, why shouldn’t a public institution submit to some obligations of performance, given that its “shareholders” – the citizens – fund its operations? Perhaps a touch of muscular productivity would shake up this bureaucratic inertia that sometimes seems insurmountable. Yes, this vision is intimidating, but who can deny a certain curiosity about seeing this model applied and watching how far it could take us?
